MARK THIBEAULT ART
POPULATED
Incidental characters, busy and crowded.
While painting for his 2019 show A Line Collected, Thibeault identified the emergence of dark and sometimes humorous figure-like characters in some pieces. See works And With This Song and A Shared Perspective. With the onset of a global pandemic in early 2020, Thibeault’s mark making changed for a moment. Rather than large gestural movements or patches of colours filling the canvas, greater areas were filled with a concentration of smaller marks. Thibeault explains that large movements somehow felt wrong in light of what we were collectively experiencing. Smaller marks then collected to make for busier imaginings. The Populated Series hints toward figurative characters, isolated or collected. |
